# Opening & Closing Positions

Dream allows users to open and close options positions through quotes provided by institutional liquidity providers.

### Opening a Position

To open a position:

1. Select the asset you want to trade.
2. Choose a call or put.
3. Select your strike price and expiration date.
4. Enter your trade size.
5. Review the available quote and total cost.
6. Confirm your trade.

Dream requests pricing for your selected contract and size. Once your trade executes, the position appears in your portfolio.

### Managing an Open Position

Your open position displays information including:

* Underlying asset and option type
* Strike price and expiration
* Position size and value
* Cost basis
* Unrealized profit or loss
* Time remaining until expiration

Your position's displayed value can change as the underlying asset moves, time passes, and market pricing changes.

### Closing a Position

You can request to close an option before expiration.

When you initiate a close, Dream requests an executable quote for your specific contract and position size.

The closing interface displays the available execution price and proceeds before you confirm the trade.

Once executed, the proceeds are credited to your Buying Power.

### When a Closing Quote Is Unavailable

Not every options contract will have a buyer available at all times.

This is particularly relevant for options that are far out of the money, approaching expiration, or have very little remaining value.

If a closing quote is unavailable, Dream may display a message such as "No Other Buyers."

If you cannot close the position, it remains open until an executable quote becomes available or the contract reaches expiration.

### Partial Closes

Where supported by the available quote and trade size, positions can be closed partially rather than all at once.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.dreamos.app/opening-and-closing-positions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
